Bob Ewell...create a character sketch
What kind of person is Bob Ewell. Use evidence from the text as you craft your response. For those of you looking for a challenge: Compare and contrast the characters of Bob Ewell and Atticus Finch: In what ways are they similar? In what ways are they different?

Bob Ewell is the type of person who wants to help but doesn't really want to cause in the book Chapter 17 page 223 it states Mr.Tate said, I was fetched by Bob--by Mr. Bob Ewell yonder, one night---What night, sir? Mr. Tate said, it was the night of November 21st. I was just leaving my office to go home when Mr. Ewell came in very excited he was, and said get out to his house quick, some nigger'd raped his girl. So in my eyes he was trying to be funny just by the way he said so Mr. Ewell is the person who you think cares but he truly doesn't.
ReplyDeleteI'm both with you comment which means I agree but on the other hand I disagree because how are he trying to be funny and how he not trying to help you have to explain your thoughts more deeply because I'm very confused.
DeleteBob Ewell is very poor. He's stuck in the racism and prejudice norm of society. To me he knows his daughter is lying base off the evidence but he continue in-flavor his daughter side of what happens. Generally speaking you would take your daughter side of an situation then a Man you really don't know. Atticus and Bob Ewell have severals differences and similarities. Atticus and Bob Are alike because they both have a loss of their wife, mother figure to their children. Their different because Atticus isn't poor, he's a lawyer and lives in the African American settlement. He's black American. Bob Ewell is white, and is very poor. He doesn't have an job and believes he's kids no matter what. Atticus on the other hand takes the side of the person who telling the truth, not who's in the wrong. For example he takes Aunt Alexandra side when Scout get smart mouth with her. He also takes Ms.Dubose side when Jem treat her and cut her flowers. He punish his children unlike Bob Ewell who takes Mayella side.

DeleteBob Ewell is a rude, irresponsible and disgraceful person because he has sexual inter courses wit his daughter, drinks up all his pay checks that he gets and don't supply his children with the support that they need. This makes him a shameful person in Maycomb.
ReplyDeleteBob and Atticus are different because Bob is irresponsible and Atticus cares about what he has to do. Bob and Atticus is similarly because they both suffer the Great Depression in the 1930's and 1920's.

DeleteI say Bob Ewell is a crazy, and a coward person with no good soul. In the text it states that he didn't have a job he was jobless and he also lived off welfare checks and when he has a job he loses it because of his laziness. Bob Ewell isn't a good person really he's just a unfair person.
ReplyDeleteThe ways Bob Ewell and Atticus Finch is the same is because they where both Men. They where different because Atticus was right handed Ewell was left handed. Atticus treated his kids we'll with all his heart and Bob Ewell beat his kids all the time. Atticus was a truthful person Bob was just a liar.
This is true he did live off welfare checks but he buys drinks and don't supply for his family.

ReplyDeleteBob Ewell is a person that take Consideration of what he do and his action. He knows what's right and he knows what wrong just like Atticus Finch. Like chapter 17 page 230-231 while they was asking the question he took action of what he did and why he was fair and I could understand what he basically trying to say more often. He own what he responsible for which is his daughter Mayella Ewell. Bob is a very brave men and he stand his ground when he suppose to. In the text page 230 "Are you the father of Mayella Ewell?" He asked, in a way that made the laughter below us stop suddenly. " Yes sir," Mr.Ewell said meekly. This tells me that he have a lot of Manners because the term "Meekly" basically means when your tone be in a manner way. Atticus and Bob is similar to one another is they both are brave and clever men's. They chose they battles and they chose them right. They are different by Bob really don't have honor for blacks but on the other hand Atticus does and he stated it for his self that he wants to treat everyone equally which means everyone will get the same amount of respect he doesn't matter what color your skin is and that's what I commit about Atticus.
I think you are right but then I think you are wrong because he does know that it is right to protect you child but then again it's wrong to be racist and judge other people.

In the text it stated(On pg.230) "Mr. Ewell was witness Mr. Gilmer witness, and he had no business being rude to him of all people." Bob Ewell is the father of Mayella Ewell. Generally speaking a parent will do anything to protect their children. Bob Ewell going to stand up for his daughter because he feels like he doing something right for the family. In the text it stated(On pg.230) "I heard Mayella screaming like a stuck hog inside the house."
ReplyDeleteAttitus Finch differ Bob Ewell because Attitus respect blacks and treat them like they have equal rights, but Bob Ewell don't. In the text it stated( On pg.231) "I seen that black nigger yonder runnin' on my Mayella !" Bob Ewell doesn't respect blacks and he's prejudice.In the text it stated(On pg.206) "They've gone. They won't bother you any more." Attitus is protecting Tom Robinson even though he's black. Attitus Finch is similar to Bob Ewell because they will probably both stand up for their children.
To Me Bob Ewell he's like a hateful person he brings nothing but hate ignorance and sadness to everyone. He is also racist he told scout that her father was defending a negro. Bob Ewell is similar to Atticus finch because they both have children without a mother to help them. (In chapter one pg.6 ) It states " Our mother died when I was, so I never felt her absences." Bob Ewell and Atticus Finch are different because Atticus is not racist and Bob Ewell is, Bob Ewell is hateful and does not like black people and all he like to see in his life is sadness he's a liar and Atticus is not. In the text it States "I'm simply defending a Negro--- his names Toms Robinson." Chapter 9 Pg. 86 to me it sounding as if Atticus was happy to defend blacks. Bob Ewell and Atticus Finch are to totally different people to me and It's basically Called the "Mean Lying one" & the "Nice telling Truth one".

ReplyDeleteI think that bob Ewell is a lazy person an expects life to just hand him out things he can't keep a job so he lives off wale fair checks because he doesn't want to go out and find some work. BOB Ewell and Atticus Finch are the same because.they are both men atticus treats his family with respect and honesty boo treats his kids wit hate and lies that's how they are different Boo is aye coward and atticus is a love an a caring person.
ReplyDeleteI would say that Mr. Ewell is a coward but at the same time he is caring. I would say that he is a coward because he doesn't want to speak up for the truth. He knows his daughter is lying and he still chooses to be on her side and defend her. But that's what also makes me think he is caring because the fact that he is lying for his daughter shows he cares about her and has her back through thick and thin. But that's not a surprise because generally speaking you would expect the father to take up for his daughter because they are blood and why would he want his daughter to go to jail?Atticus Finch and Bob Ewell are similar because both of their children has lost there mother and all they have left is their father it says that in chapter 17 "We'll if I ain't I can't do nothing about it now, her mother is dead." They are different because Mr. Ewell is poor and Atticus is not and Mr. Ewell is not as separated from the blacks as Atticus is because the Ewells live right next to them.

How I will define Bob Ewell is nasty because he have sex with his daughter and use all his money on drinks so his whole life is a lie.

Well Bob Ewell and Atticus Finch can be compare and contrast. Like both of them have a loss of a wife and they both have kids. Atticus Finch is a lawyer and don't live by the dump or black people, also Atticus have a education and Atticus teach Jem and Scout right from wrong. And don't always take up for us kids if he know they did something wrong. Bob Ewell are poor, doesn't have a job, believe in his kids even if they did something wrong and he know they did something, drunk A lot, he also doesn't have a education and he also have to live by the dump and black people
In the text we stumble upon Atticus Finch and Bob Ewell, they are two different characters with two different personalities. They have very few if any in common and at this part of the text I'm almost certain thats it's a lot of tension between the two. Bob Ewell is a men that lacks a lot of men like qualities.

He is a out of control drunk, He lies and does everything he can only to help him self, we'll him and his family. Instead of caring he lets his kids run wild not caring about nothing. In the text he lets his kids treat school like a joke the only thing I believe that him and Atticus have in common is there gender and that they both have families.
ReplyDeleteI think that Bob Ewell is a person seeking to get sympathy from the towns folks in MayComb. I feel that Bob thinks that by accusing Tom Robinson of rapping his daughter that the town would be sorry for them and comfort them with things such as money,food, and other resources that the family doesn't have.
And Bob is a drunk. So this makes me to believe that after his welfare check was gone he needs more money to supply the family, and himself with beer/and other drinks. So he lies to get the sympathy of the towns. And he thinks that the town would feel sorry for them and supply them with money, and food. So with that I think he thinks that with the money he will buy more beer/drinks, and the food will go to his family.
Bob Ewell is the type of man who takes up for his daughter, but he is also a slick man. The reason why I say this is because Bob Ewell used Mr.Tate to take up for his daughter. Everything that Mr. Tate had said was in suspense because he kept looking over at the bench where Bob Ewell was. Also Mr. Ewell was defending his daughter in anyway he could and my reaction to this is I think Bob wanted Tom Robinson in jail because he was black.
ReplyDeleteThe similarities between Bob and Atticus is they wife died and they both wanted to defend their people they took up for. Atticus took up for Tom Robinson because he thought it was the right thing and Bob took up for his Daughter because Tom was black and who wouldn't take up their daughter?
I think that Bob Ewell is someone that is impulsive and lacks awareness the position he's in.
ReplyDeleteI think that Bob is impulsive because he said something out of impulse to the way he was feeling. In court Bob verbally Insulted Tom Robinson and yelled at Mr. Gilmer. In the story it says that, "Mr. Ewells face grew scarlet. I seen that black nigger yonder ruttin' on my Mayella.". This shows that Bob Ewell acted on complete impulse. Usually you would stay calm if your in a place like court or they will overturn your testimonies and think something fishy may be going on, but in this case this shows a prime example of impulse and the misinterpretation Bob is in. He might have did that to make the situation on Tom Robinson's behalf seem worse than it is and make his story believable but I think there is always a second alternative.
I think that Bob lacks awareness with the position he's in, in terms of accusing Tom Robinson of rape. As we know in the 1930's there was a problem with money and economic failure and the Ewells particularly stick out because they were the poorest of the white people even though they are white they live not so much different from the African Americans. When Bob takes Tom Robinson to court and accuses him of sexual assaulting his daughter there's nothing to gain from it. This is why he lacks awareness because usually you would think if you take someone to court you would expect to gain a fund of expect to gain something period, but this did not apply in this situation Tom Robinson has no money or any valuable possessions to take so Bob isn't going to gain anything.
I think Bob Ewell is a liar, selfish, ignorant, and prejudice. He knows Tom Robinson didn't rape his daughter and he doesn't have any sympathy for Him. Atticus is very different because he wouldn't blame someone for doing something they wouldn't do because he's a good person. Bob Ewell is poor, a drunk and abusive. He does things that Atticus would never do.
