What is the most compelling or memorable thing that Atticus said in his closing statement to the jury? Explain what he means by what he says...

  1. The most compelling or memorable thing that Atticus said in his closing statement to the jury was when he said "I have nothing but pity in my heart for the chief witness for the state, but my pity does not extend so far as to her putting a man's life at stake, which she has done in an effort to get rid of her own guilt". (Page 271) To me I think he means that he has no pity for Mayella cause she could've put Tom in more danger just accusing him that he raped her I wouldn't have pity on her either if she did the same to me cause I think it's just wrong to accuse a man of something he clearly didn't do..

    1. You describe your statement clearly

    2. I agree with Ikira we had the same quote and the same thing just in different ways. I said he just doesn't feel pity for her and he won't bring himself to feel sorry for her.

    3. I agree with you Ikira about having no pity for Mayella.

  2. We'll on page 274 the quote says "we know all men are not created equal in the sense some people would have us believe I agree with this quote because I also think as in know that all men are not equal or the same everyone is human but everyone doesn't have to be the same person. Men are going to be men but men rant going to be the same so therefore all men shouldn't be treated the same either because once again everyone isn't the same. I say this is the most compelling thing that he said at the closing statement to the jury.

  3. The most compelling thing that Atticus has said during the end of his speech to the jury is "all men are created equal"(pg.274),what Atticus meant by this is that if all men are created equal no one man can down or judge another man

    1. I agree with you Angel that we all created equal and we shouldn't judge nobody.

    2. I agree but i fill that there is more reasons to why Atticus says this. Such as to why is Tom being convicted for the color of his skin and not because of the evidence when all men are suppose to be equal.

    3. i agree with you statement and jabari's i think you could have taken this beyond 4 lines and made it better, after all your the one that understands the books the most. but nice work

  4. "Thomas Jefferson once said that all men are created equal..." (pg 273). The meaning of this quote when Atticus says it is that once a man is born we are born with justice and equality so we can do things ourselves. Another way this quote is honoring and compelling is that Tom Robinson should be treated equally instead of suffering from what he didn't do.

    3. I agree with this not just because I had the same quote because I also believe that if all men was equal than why is Tom being convicted.

    4. i agree with this and the court should have came to a fair verdict if all men were created equally Tom was not guilty but the court and jury only thought with there skin color

  5. "I have nothing but pity in my heart for the chief witness for the state, but my pity does not extend so far as to her putting a mans life at stake, which she has done in effort to get rid of her ow guilt "(271).
My reaction to this is that I agree with him and I believe he should not take pity on her or feel sorry for her because what she did is unforgivable. And I think he means that he will not give her props for sending an innocent man to jail because he doesn't support that. And I think he means that he has pity for most of the witnesses more so Tom Robinson but he will not feel sorry for Mayella.

    1. I positively agree with you Thomesha, I basically said the same thing like why would he feel sorry for someone that knew who did it but but it on someone else that had no attention to do anything harsh to that girl.

    2. I agree when you say that he should not take the pity or feel sorry for he because what she did is unforgivable. I agree with this cause she had no reason to lie on that man if she knew she come up on him and she knew he father was the one beating and doing he wrong.but she had no reason to put that man in big trouble if she knew he was helping her out.

  6. " She was white, and she tempted a Negro. She did something that in our society is unspeakable: she kiss a black man" (On pg.272).

People in Maycomb are disrespectful to blacks. Blacks gets treated differently from whites. Mayella(white) kissing Tom Robinson(black) in 1900's wasn't right because blacks didn't get treated right. Mayella knew it was wrong to kiss a black man because it was going to be a bad reaction from the town and her father Bob Ewell. I agree with this comment because blacks don't have a lot of equal rights like whites did and for Mayella to kiss him was going to be a lot of negative energy from people.

    2. Whites tries to take advantage of blacks and do things bad to blacks to make them innocent and make the blacks guilty because in the court whites will stick with their race so, I agree

  7. I believe that the most compelling thing that Atticus says in his closing statement is "Thomas Jefferson once said that all men are created equal"(274). I think this means that if every man is created equal then why is it that Tom Robinson is the being convicted for a crime that he clearly didn't do. And also this means that there is no clear evidence that Tom committed a crime so why is he even in court. I think that this quote is ironic because if even man was equal then why does they treat the blacks in MayComb so different from the whites. Such as the blacks living close to the dumb, not getting fair trails, etc., well on the other hand the whites live in the city, are lying so that the blacks go to jail, etc..

    1. I agree with you Jabari because everything you said I obvious to the quote. I couldn't have said I better myself. If I did this quote I would have the same thing or something close to this.

    2. Me and Jabari have the Same quote and he said some stuff I didn't say and I said some stuff that he didn't say so I agree. I notice how me and you are using different ideas to explain our thinking.

    3. I agree with your thoughts your thinking is really deep.

    4. i agree with you the law said everyone is equal and should be treated fairly but this law in maycomb is like taboo no one care about it even though its absolute and i like your thinking and evidence

  8. "The children left behind suffer terrible feelings of inferiority. We know all men are not created equal in the sense some people would us believe--some people are smarter than others, some people have more opportunity because they're born with it, some men make more money than others, some ladies make better cakes than others--some people are born gifted beyond the normal scope of most men"(p.274).

From this, it tells me truthfully that everyone isn't perfect. Coming from a white man in the 1930s makes me think, that every white person isn't racist. This compares to reality a lot because now, most whites will try to say that blacks are dumb, they can't do anything until they're proven wrong. This text tells me a lot because I was judged all my life. But people are prejudice and things won't change. Until you prove everyone wrong.

  9. " Some Negroes lie.some Negroes are immoral, some Negroes men are not to be trusted around women black or white" (p 273) Basically he mean that every nigga don't lie like everybody think they do, every nigga not bad or evil like everybody want them to be, every nigga can't be trust around a women no matter what color they are but some negroes men can be trust around a women. I agree with this statement Atticus said because every nigga are not as everybody think they are and some negroes are not like another negroes as everyone think they is.

    2. I agree with you Ralph, but if I was to do this I wouldn't say that's what he meant when he said some Negros lie, because everyone that can talk has told a lie and it's not just Negros. And I think it's just saying that it's not only Negros, just like whites also lie and some whites are also bad so why are they not being treated like blacks.

    3. I agree with you Ralphelle because some negros are different because some can be mean and rude but some can also be nice and kind....So I agree with you

  10. My Quote: "I have nothing but pity in my heart for the chief witness for the state, but my pity does not extend so far as to her putting a man's life at stake, which she has done in an effort to get rid of her own guilt" (p.271).

This quote basically means that he feels sorry for the Mayella but he don't feel sorry in that way that will lead more feelings to put any man in a predicament that this could be the last day he see his family because of something that he had nothing to do with he was very innocent. Then when he stated "which she has done in an effort to get rid of her own guilt" means she knew that she was lying and she was very guilty up she was not giving up like she was not telling who actually did it. If you do anything like this you putting somebody life in a bad position because that Man Tom could have went to jail for something that he positively didn't even do. My reaction to this quote is that Atticus was a man to even make this quote because he basically saying you have to have a lot of thick blood to do what Mayella just did and that dry harsh to me and that man could have been gone for life can't see his family or nothing but over something that he didn't do.

  11. Something that is the most compelling or memorable thing that Atticus said in his closing statement to the jury is that "But there is one way in this country in which all men are created equal-- there is one human institution that makes a pauper the equal of a Rockefeller, the stupid man the equal of an Einstein, and the ignorant man the equal of any college president." (Pg 274)

I agree with this and I think it is truly true, to me the meaning of this is all men should be equal it don't matter if they are black or white they all are the same because all men shall work hard and come home to there family. Then I think it's saying there always one men who tries to make the country a better place by making black & whites come together & they get punish, then it's always this ignorant men that is ready always ready to be and war &guess what they get rewarded for the things they shouldn't do I agree with Atticus but it makes me despondent when I think about it but then I get all happy because The Lord has brought us to so much with happy tears to cry. So I just thank Atticus for speaking the truth.

  12. "The defendant is not guilty, but someone in this court room is." (P. 271) .

Atticus is referring to to the fact that Bob Ewell is the real guilty person. The reason why I find this interesting is because it shows this trial is for the wrong guy and also it shows that Atticus believes there is no type of evidence against Tom Robinson.

  13. "You know the truth, and the truth is this: some Negroes lie, some Negroes are immoral, some Negro men are not to be trusted around women--black or white. But this is a truth that applies to the human race and to no particular race of men" (p. 273).

This Quote means that color is what they made of us blacks back then. We never had a fair square at anything not even in the court of law and justice. We were portrayed as liars before. we even took the stand to testify. Atticus shows us that you can't bend the truth just because we are black. What's right is what's right, this didn't matter to most whites though. They defended their culture even when they were the ones wrong. We couldn't never get a break no matter what, they would continue to point fingers at us.

This shows that we all lie and when we do we should face the real truth. It's shows that if we can't be equals in the world, we should at least be equals in the courtroom. When I read things like this it shows that just because we are black people now and then we had strikes against us just because of our color. Tom in this case was flat out right and truthful and every one in that court room knew it. They were about to sentence a man yo jail time for a crime he didn't even commit. His mind set was just on help her and when us blacks even do the right thing we are still wrong. Now a days it's about fair at least that's what they won't us to think. Not a lot has changed since then and this quote but more importantly this case shows that. They want to and wanted to keep us down and it's up to us to prove them wrong. Show them that we can accomplish. Even when they say we are lying when we know we are not like in this case we have to never put our heads down and keep pushing or else history will repeat its self again. Our choices is what makes us who we are. Not our skin.

  14. The most compelling or memorable thing that Atticus said in his closing statement to the jury is "She is the victim of cruel poverty and ignorance, but I cannot pity her: she is white"(pg.272).
My reaction to this quote is both Mayella Ewell and Tom Robinson were two poor people suffered in a crime of ignorance, they both are accused of lying. Atticus took a stand for Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white women. Atticus wants to prove to the jury that Tom is not guilty and Mayella is taking up for her Father. Atticus didn't want to show any compassion for Mayella because he knew she was a lie and he wanted to prove his point. He also know that Mayella would try to get away with the crime because she was white. She would know that the jury would believe her side of the story.

    1. i agree with you not because we have the same quote but because this quote shows Atticus as a man and the way he structures himself and his beliefs and put them all into an argument and made it reasonable and fair. i like your thinking

  15. "We know its itself a lie as black as Tom Robinson's skin, a lie I do have to point out to you. You know the truth..."(pg.273).

This quotes really summarizes what the case was about, the "truth" of the situation. Atticus is indicating that even though Tom Robinson is black, he's telling the truth, certainly Atticus wouldn't try to defend any person he knew was probably telling a lie. Atticus is a fair man, so he does the right thing by trying to defend Tom Robinson, even though the odds are against them. I really agree with this quote. It reminds me of the symbol of a mockingbird, and if they chose to portray Tom Robinson as a guilty man, then they're actually killing a mockingbird by putting an innocent man in jail. Atticus is saying that they know the truth, and both Mayella, Tom Robinson, and the other witnesses swore to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth so help them God. This tells me that someone has to be lying if all their stories aren't the same. Based off the evidence presented in this case, the jury should have a well-built answer to who is lying and who is just being honest. Tom Robinson is being honest to me.

  16. I think the most compelling thing Atticus said was “She is a victim of cruel poverty and ignorance, but I cannot pity her: She is white.
I think this is the most compelling thing Atticus said because when Tom Robinson made the comment he felt sorry for Mayella the jury and Mr. Gilmer was ready to go through the roof, for the simple fact that a black man felt sorry for a white women. So I think by Atticus saying she’s a victim of a cruel poverty and ignorance but he cannot pity her, shes white is a way of making the court see that everyone is fair and if a black man is not able to feel sorry for a white women for the simple fact that he’s black, then the white man shouldn’t have the right to feel sorry for the white women either. So that brings them on the same level.

What I also grab from this statement is that Atticus could take pity on Mayella but he’s not because she doesn’t deserve that right. Mayella is a white woman so there for herself and her sisters and brothers have the right to an education and an opportunity to break out of poverty with the proper tools that are handed to them, whilst on the other hand the black people aren’t provided with the necessary tools to do so and she has grown up with her racist father and his ignorant ways towards black people and lack of awareness for education and the lack of a mother figure in her life, there for this might have influenced her, but Making the choice to not go to school and stay in poverty knowing she could have set a different road for herself is a reason not to feel sorry for Mayella because like Atticus said she’s white after all.
