Alexandra and Calpurnia....What do you Think?

How would you describe the relationship between Calpurnia and Alexandra? Use evidence from the text to justify your thinking.

  1. Calpurnia and Aunt Alexandra relation is a bit shaky even though they both are a helping hand for Atticus. In the text it says" Alexandra, Calpurnia is not leaving this house until she want to. You may think other wise, but I couldn't have got along without her all these years. She been a faithful member of this family and you simply have to accept things the way they are."(pg.182) This tells me that aunt Alexandra is trying to get rid of calpurnia. Generally speaking if you like someone, you wouldn't try to get them fire. The reason I feel Aunt Alexandra is trying to get rid of calpurnia is because they both plays a strong feminine role in Scout life and Aunt Alexandra doesn't want to share that role. Both of them have can have an effect on how scout act and Alexandra may want more attention and chooses to eliminate the competition.

    1. I agree because I used the same word to describe their relationship but I also used weird. And I had some of the same evidence.

    2. I AGREE because Calpurnia is trying to do something good for the neighborhood when there's some (Alexandra) trying to stop her

    3. I wonder if Alexandra has different feelings about Blacks than Atticus...do you think they (meaning Alexandra and Atticus) share the same values regarding Calpurnia?

    5. I think that they have different ways of viewing black peoples. Atticus treats all the same and is so loyal to Calpurnia, he doesn't listen to what Alexandra says about firing her. On the other hand Alexandra doesn't care much for Calpurnia, and wants to be the only female figure in scout life. Alexandra reason of coming to live with them was to have an feminine influence on the finch family. Alexandra makes Calpurnia feel like their friends, but really she trying to have her gone. Alexandra have a different way of viewing blacks because she's white and haven't been living with Calpurnia(a black women) as long as Atticus have to understand what Cal have contributed to that family.

    6. I agree with you Joshua because Calpurnia was a kind of a lay back person like she a nice person in her own ways and don't bother anyone she just stay to her self

  2. So there relationship isn't good because Alexander doesn't like Calpurnia she think she's to faithful to the family. In the text it states "she took the children to her church and she's racist. But Calpurnia treats Alexander like she is the boss or something or as if she treats her strictly. They don't really like each other and they really has a bad relationship. In the text it also stated that Alexander wanted Atticus to fire Clapurnia from her job because she doesn't like her bad influence on Scout and Alexander doesn't like that. At one point the love each other deeply but the the relationship they have isn't so well because Calpurnia is racist to her but, there ah family.

    1. I agree because that's stupid to not like someone because of their skin color or the fact that they are trying to bring black and whites together

    3. I disagree with the racism part because I feel that she wanted to be the only mother like figure in Scouts life so she had to get Calpurnia fired so that her plan could could become reality.

  3. I think Calpurnia and Alexandra has an important relationship, because Alexandra doesn't likes Calpurnia bit thinks Calpurnia is a true member of the family, I think Alexandra would have like Calpurnia if she haven't brought does white kids to church so Alexandra doesn't like Calpurnia because of that. I think They have an important relationship because Alexandra brings back races when there is segregation going on. To me I think Calpurnia was trying to bring black and whites together and Alexandra and the people at the church was not ready for an change.

    3. Interesting...so you think Calpurnia is challenging norms of race relations between whites and blacks at the time by bringing the kids to church with her. So, if this is true, how do you think Alexandra feels about race relations between whites and blacks?

      Delete
    4. Well I think Alexandra feel that if she's black then there should not be no white kids around I think she trying to get back at the white people basically since the started race she wanted to finish it all about "Carma" that goes around comes back around.

  5. Alexandra and Calpurnia's relationship is very shaky because Alexandra thinks that Calpurnia is a bad influence on the children. I would say their relationship is also weird because you would expect Alexandra and Atticus to have the same feelings towards Calpurnia considering the fact that they are brother and sister and that Alexandra is now living with them, but they don't. Atticus defends Calpurnia and cares for her as if she was apart of their family. In Chapter 14 on page 183 Atticus says to Alexandra "Besides I don't think the children've suffered one bit from her having brought them up. If anything she has been harder on them in some ways than a mother would have been....... She's never let them get away with anything." He considers her as the mother they never had. But when you look at Calpurnia and Alexandra's relationship Alexandra doesn't feel the same way. She thinks that Calpurnia she ruining the kids and that Atticus should fire her as soon as possible. In Chapter 14 on page 182 Alexandra says "And don't try and get around it. You've got to face it sooner or later and it might as we'll be tonight. We don't need her now." Alexandra is trying get rid of Calpurnia. I can honestly say the feeling Alexandra has for Calpurnia is not mutual, because the kids nor Atticus feels the same way.

    2. To add on to Joshua's thinking Alexandra want to get rid of Calpurnia but Calpurnia felt that it was good to have another women in the house. That's why I agree with Thomesha when she says there relationship is shaky.

    3. I feel Alexandra Just Don't Like Calpurnia Because of her color Cause like Calpurnia never did anything to Alexandre. what Can Be Another reason if Calppurnia did not do anything to him

    5. If Scout's mother were alive, what kind of parent do you think she might be, especially considering how Atticus is as a father?

      Delete
    6. Mr.C I really can't say what kind of mother she might have been. Mainly because there is not a lot of info about the kind of mother she was before she died considering the fact that the narrator of the story cant say much about her because she (Scout) doesn't remember her at all because she was not at the age of remembrance at the time her mom was still alive.

    7. I agree with you Thomesha because As I read the text I notice that Alexandra keep telling Atticus you need to do something about scout because how her personality are

  6. In the story " To Kill a Mockingbird " the character Scouts aunt, Alexandria comes to live with them. We'll living with the family she starts to fill that the character Calpurnia should be fired because she is there now.

This brings me to feel that Alexandria dislikes Calpurnia but Calpurnia fills great to have her there. In the text Calpurnia says " your aunts doing me a favor as well as you all ". " I can't stay here all day with you, the summers going to be a hot one. Generally speak if someone is doing you a favor you would think of them as a friend. So this made me out to think that Calpurnia and Alexandria would become friends because of Calpurnia's comments.

Then Alexandria goes to Atticus and tells him that he should fire Calpurnia but Atticus is loyal to Cal so he tells her he still needs her. Typically a person that you feel you have became friends with would not go behind your back and tell your boss that he should fire you. This means that Alexandria wanted Calpurnia to believe that they were friends so that it would make it easier for her to get Cal fired. So this made me feel that Alexandria is untrustworthy and dislikes Calpurnia. But from previous comments I could see that Calpurnia wanted to become friends with Alexandria because they would now be the two women around the house.

    4. I agree with you Jabari you stated that when someone is doing you a favor you will consider them you friend you will want to get to know them more but Alexandra didn't take it that way which was for a reason

  7. I don't think Calpurnia and Alexandrea has a good relationship at all

I think the relationship between Calpurnia and Aunt Alexandrea is not a great one. In the story it says, "you all were coming back from Calpurnia's church that Sunday Jem said, yessum".... "She promised me I could come to her house some afternoon. Atticus I'll go next Sunday if alright, can I"? "You may not", Aunt Alexandra said......."you've got to do something about her". "You can't let things go on"..."and don't try to get around it you've got to face it sooner or later and it might as well be tonight". "We don't need her now"....."Alexandra, Calpurnia's not leaving this house until she want to",(ch.14). Most of the time, you would think a person would keep others around so they can help them but, Aunt Alexandrea try's to persuade Atticus to get rid of Calpurnia because she took Jem and Scout with her to her church and she thinks that these actions could have a negative effect on the kids. Also Aunt Alexandrea thinks that they don't need Calpurnia anymore because she lives there for now for the time being, I also think Aunt Alexandrea might be a little jealous of Calpurnia because she's closer to the kids than she is.

    2. I think that Aunt Alexandra might think the kids are going to start picking up the dialect they have just like when she developed a way for her to speak badly (using curse words) or she might think them being with Calpurnia at church is going to shame the Finch name even more than it already is with the Tom Robinson case

  8. I think Alexandra don't like Calpurnia cause of her color because as i was read they never said Calpurnia did anything to Alexandra. Alexandra only been there for couple days and did anything happen. (Page 181) When Scout told Atticus about her trip to Calpurnia Church, Aunt Alexandra was siting in the corner sewing she put Her embroidery and just stared at Scout and Atticus. Alexandra ask "you all were coming back from Calpurnia church that Sunday". This what made me think that Alexandra don't like Calpurnia for her color who would ask that question if they did not have no problem with somebody. Another reason I think that because when Scout told her father that Calpurnia made a promise that Scout can come out to her house some afternoon.Aunt Alexandra Said You May Not(page 181). What is the problem with Scout going to Calpurnia house and she know her all her life. Alexandra ask to let Calpurnia leave cause they need her (page 182). Calpurnia been there with them for a long time and she harder than any mother would have been on them kids.

How much of Alexandra's problems with Calpurnia is because of eh skin color?

  9. I think Aunt Alexandra and Calpurnia relationship is out of jealousy because Aunt Alexandra thinks that Calpurnia is trying to be a mother figure to Scout even though Aunt Alexandra want to be a mother figure to Scout too but I think that's why Scout acts like that because she doesn't have a mother figure in her life to teach her to act a certain way...On page 137 it states "Besides, I don't think the children've suffered one bit from her having brought them up. If anything, she's been harder on them in some ways a mother would've been...she's never let them get away with anything, she's never indulged them the way most colored nurses do. She tried to bring them up according to her lights, and Cal's lights are pretty good and another, the children love her....So to me I think Aunt Alexandra is jealous because she thinks Calpurnia is trying to be a mother figure to Scout...

  10. Calpurnia and Alexandra relationship is something that can be handle a different way. I felt the attention as soon as Aunt Alexandra was introduce to in the house hold of Atticus and Calpurnia and Alexandra relationship is something that can be handle a different way. I felt the attention as soon as Aunt Alexandra was introduce to in the house hold of Atticus and Calpurnia and Atticus kids on chapter 13 page 169 "put my bag in the front bedroom, Calpurnia"was the first thing Aunt Alexandra said. I think she could have said it a little better because Calpurnia didn't have to put anything up so that make people think that Alexandra Is disrespectful and don't have no manners. On the other hand I say Calpurnia is a nice lady in her own ways because after Alexandra said it all disrespectful she still put her bag up as she was told. Then I noticed that Alexandra wanted Calpurnia out the house for some reason going back to the text on chapter 14 page 182 "you've got to do something about her," Aunty was saying. Then it states " Alexandra, Calpurnia's not leaving this house until she wants to". I don't understand because this lady didn't do anything to Alexandra to want her to leave but I just think Alexandra is evil and it's so devastated to me because she didn't even try to get to know Cal she just judging her by what she thinks which is not fair at all. So to re phrase what I'm trying to say something's they could work out as far as talking it out because things are not worth fighting for sometimes you have to choose your battles and choose them right.

    2. So Alexandra feels like it's her house, since it belongs to her brother, but you feel like Calpurnia has more of a claim to it, since she's been there for so long...could Calpurnia have spoken out and said that Alexandra was being rude? Would that have been socially acceptable given the time period?

  12. Aunt Alexandra and Calpurnia plays a really important role in Scouts life. They are teaching Scout how to act like a lady and being a feminine influence, which is going to lead Scout into evolving to be a woman. I think Calpurnia and Aunt Alexandra's relationship is really not that healthy. The closeness of their relationship is on and off.
In the text it says, "Atticus, it's alright to be soft-hearted, you're an easy man, but you have a daughter to think of. A daughter who's growing up.' 'That's what I am thinking of.' 'And don't try to get around it. You've got to face it. You've got to face it sooner or later and it might as we'll be tonight. We don't need her now.' 'Alexandra, Calpurnia's not leaving this house until she wants to. You may think otherwise, but I couldn't have got along without her all these years. She's a faithful member of this family and you'll simply have to accept things the way they are.' 'But Atticus--'"
By this text, it tells me that Aunt Alexandra doesn't like her that much. Generally speaking, if you ask someone to fire someone else from their job, it shows that you really don't like or care about that person.

  13. The relationship between Alexandra and Calpurina is ok because in the story it says that. Atticus voice was even "Alexandra ,calpurina not leavening until she want to .you may think otherwise but " I could not have got along with her all these years" shes a member of this family and you simply have to accept things the way they are sis Alexandra did not want Calpurina. There Because I think that she don't like the way that she raised scout and the jem

  14. How I would describe Aunt Alexandra and Calpurnia relationship is dull. The reason I say this is because Aunt Alexandra thinks she can do her job so they want need her and don't like her because she took Jem and Scout to her church and that she is racist against black people. I notice this on page 182 when she was trying to convince Atticus to fire Calpurnia.

  15. I would describe the relationship between Calpurnia and Alexandra as racist. In the text it states "...you've got to do something about her, Aunty was saying. You've let things go on too long, Atticus, too long( pg.182)". This tells me that Alexandra didn't want Calpurnia in Atticus's home because she was black. Generally speaking, there wouldn't be no one wanting another person in their home for no particular reason. The reason why I said this is because Calpurnia hadn't done anything to Alexandra, except that she's a different race.

  16. The relationship between Alexandra and Calpurnia is not good because Alexandra is mad that Atticus would not fire Calpurnia because in the text it states " Alexandra Calpurnia is not leaving this house until she wants to and Alexandra Is mad that Calpurnia took the kids to her church because she is racist. So Alexandra and Calpurnia do not get along.
